Auburn came without longtime head coach Frank Tolbert, recovering from a rare illness, and star Jimmy Vickerstaff, who hurt his knee in football season. Interim coach Dave Ogle, Tolbert's longtime aide, kept the familiar game plan of fundamentals, discipline and man-to-man defense, playing about 13 players. Six-foot junior Aubrey Reese scored around 20 points a game, with 6-1 wing Forest Smith and 6-1 post Lendsley Jackson near 10 each; Kenan Penaskobic (6-1) was the lone senior. The Tigers had won at least 20 games in 13 of the past 14 years. 7-5 coming in.
