Byron Kinney's AAAA Gamecocks, state champions in 1980, 1981 and 1985, won their first five and rose to sixth in South Carolina before a 52-50 loss to Orangeburg-Wilkinson. They had only two seniors but nine players back, and with no one over 6-foot-4, which Kinney said Sumter never had, they leaned on quickness and balanced scoring. The lineup changed every game, but guards Kelton Walters (5-11, sr.) and Mark Shaw (6-2, sr.) and forward-center Darren McDuffie (6-4, jr.) started them all, each scoring about 12. 5-1 coming in.
