Michael Bailey's Bruins started slowly but brought perhaps the tournament's finest player, 6-8 Corey Stewart, a versatile athlete inside or out who had signed with Virginia, the third Cavalier recruit in three Arby's Classics after Bryant Stith (1987) and Terry Kirby (1988). He averaged 14.3 points after 13 points and 12 rebounds a year earlier. Bethel had played a tough early schedule without point guard Peter Barner, injured, and junior Mike Taylor, suspended; both were due back. Two sophomores were among the top eight. 0-3 coming in.
