Mike Williams turned a young 11-17 club into one of the Big 10's most experienced, with five full- or part-time starters back, and was an early pick for the conference's coach of the year. Not deep, the Rebels shot about 45 percent and opened with five straight wins before losing to Tennessee High. Senior post Glen Cullop (6-5) led at 14.7 points and 6-3 senior Sam Hale added 13.5, with 5-11 sophomore Jeff Miller and wings Brent Taylor (6-1, sr.) and David Bowery (5-11, sr.). Football receiver Stephen Dietz came off the bench first. 10-2 coming in.
