Retooling after losing several key players, the Cougars lost five of their first seven but had won four straight and stood 3-1 in the Big Nine. Dickie Warren, with 678 wins and regarded as one of Tennessee's premier coaches, relied on 6-4 center Jeff Stidham (13.6) and 6-0 wing Pat Bridwell (11.6). 6-5 coming in.
