Dickie Warren, in his 41st year as a head coach and his 30th at Central, was the winningest active coach in Tennessee at 891-391. His young team, in its first season in the Appalachian Athletic Conference, was under .500 after a tough early schedule and a bout of pneumonia, but shot the three well, led by 6-1 senior guard Tim Frye (13.3 ppg) and 6-3 junior forward Eric Bunn (9). The slow-tempo Cougar Shuffle could confuse a team not used to it. 2-4 coming in.
